FOTOVERKSTEDET

Fotoverkstedet is Bergen’s only publicly accessible artist-run darkroom, serving both professional artists and the broader public through workshops, exhibitions, and residencies. There is a shared calendar booking system that allows members to work both privately and collaboratively.
Fotoverkstedet was established at Bergen centre in 2017, with support from Bergen Kommune’s Etableringsstipend.  Fotoverkstedet has now relocated to Damsgårdsveien 229 in Laksevåg.

Bergen / Norway

  • 2026:
    Fotoverkstedet will not offer a residency in 2026, as we will focus on rebuilding and developing the darkroom facilities.

    2027:
    Fotoverkstedet hope to organize a residency in 2027.

    Requirements:
    -Meet&Greet in the beginning of the exchange
    -Specific person to take care of the artist
    -Gettogether in the end of the exchange for the artist to present their work )
    -Some documentation of the artist's working period for the founders and funding organisations

  • Fotoverkstedet has relocated to Damsgårdsveien 229 in Laksevåg in 2025 and is currently being rebuilt.

  • In the Darkroom:

    • Free use of old/ expired paper

    • Two large sinks with taps and shower heads

    • Over sink and ceiling ventilation

    • Red safelights controlled by remotes

    • Film development tanks and reels for 135 and 120 mm, frames for 8x10 inch.

    • Drying cabinet for films and prints

    • Drying screens for all kinds of prints up to 70cm x 90cm

    • Printing equipment e.g. paper easels up to 60x70cm, focus finders, MG filters, etc.

    • A metal plate wall for large size printing

    • Developing equipment e.g. paper trays up to 60x70cm and tubes 60cm in length, beakers, measuring cups, tongs etc.

    • Drying cabinet for films and prints

    • Jobo AutoLab 1000

    • Print Washer

      Artists are responsible to prepare their own chemicals and dispose of the waste; no shared chemicals in the darkroom.

      In the Lightroom

      • Large working table 200x160cm

      • Two paper cutter

      • Large light box on wall

      • Epson scanner V850 with film holders for 120 and 4x5

      • Storage
