2026 – Björkö Konstnod / Sweden
Lexy Liangzi Xiao
I spent a four-week residency at BKN. Maja and Marina welcomed me and showed me around the workshops, accommodation, and local area. I also met other artists in residence and a few BKN members.
During the first week, I participated in a sustainable photography workshop led by Maria Magnusson, exploring Caffenol and rosehip developer for paper, and Phytogram. Phytogram provided me with another possibility for creating the fourth artist’s book in the series Impermanent Shadows. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) from homemade developers provided me with new crystal patterns for darkroom printing. We also combined the prints developed by the rosehip developer with Indirect Toning, during a two-day Silver Mirroring Toning workshop I led over the weekend.
During the following weeks, I mainly worked on three directions: Exploring how to grow the right ice crystal patterns and preserve them for darkroom printing; Experimenting with Silver Mirroring Toning using patterns from ice crystals and ascorbic acid crystals on different FB and RC papers; using natural dye from wild blueberries collected in the forest on fabric and thread for the cover of the third artist’s book Impermanent Shadows (Anthotype).
On the final Sunday, I gave an online-accessible presentation about my artistic practice and the experiments during the residency, followed by a pop-up exhibition and open studio where I shared the outcomes of the residency. It was a great experience working and living at BKN, in Stockholm, Sweden.
